[Having been brought here a second time, he had been given the same communicator device as before; and there appears to be an old message on it, still marked as unread, that must have appeared after his initial departure.

Should he erase it? Reply to it? Is the person who initially sent it even still here?

He stares at it a second before typing out a quick response, not really expecting to get anything back.]

[ Whoa she squints at the communicator for a while, trying to remember all the circumstances, when - Oh, yeah, oh, man! ]

No, it's OK. Can you cover my 2 pm shift on the 24th of November 2014? (Time machine might be required.)

[He actually pauses at the mention of a time machine, but follows up with a somewhat amused reply.]

sure, just let me go get my trusty time machine and set the date!
pretty sure I wasn't doing anything on november 24th

GOD no. I quit ages ago. I've got two part-time jobs now, one at a cafe and one at a pub. Oh, and my name's not Lizzie any longer, either.

I can't blame you, it wasn't exactly the best job ever. but two part time jobs? you must be a go-getter

but why the name change?

[He's guessing it wasn't ever Lizzie to begin with? Who knows, with a place like this?]

Oh, I was in hiding from a representative of my government back home, because I'm sort of an enemy of the state. You know how it goes.

Anyway, I do pretty well with the jobs. I earn good tips.

I know a bit about demolitions. Not much, but enough to maybe give you a little bit. But yeah if it's not something you're keen on you should probably quit. Why did terrorists try to kill you?

really? I wasn't expecting that, but sure, I'll take a what I can get
we'll see how the job goes. I'll probably move onto something else, but it'd be interesting to blow up a condemned building, or at least watch it happen [Because c'mon, it does sound a little cool.]

as for people trying to kill me, that's a long story
basically a friend of mine stole some plutonium from them and they wanted it back

[ whoa. Like okay that first part deserves some comment (because yeah, it does sound fairly cool) but more to the point: ]

well you see, he's kind of an eccentric guy. really into science
he needed it for a project he was working on
when he sets his mind to something, he does just about anything to get it done. sure, sometimes it's questionable, but hey, he's a good guy

[Only a slightly delayed response comes this time. It's hard to break out of the habit of not talking about time travel, multiple timelines, etc. In this world, the rules are a little more lenient. (At least he'd like to think so.) Weird timelines and alternate universes seem to be the norm.]

[ Whoa. Huh. ]

I haven't got any reason NOT to believe you. Is it the truth?

[It won't take him long to find the place; he thinks he might have passed by it while he was wandering around Heropa, trying to get a lay of the land a second time through. When he rolls on up, he parks the DeLorean on the side of the street, and then enters the cafe.

When he looks around, he realizes that maybe he should have gotten an idea of what she looked like first before he decided to meet up.]

[ And Marty's at a disadvantage, too. Kitty is one of three waitresses on duty, and all of them wear the same uniform - black shirt and trousers, blue apron. And Kitty looks like a local at the best of times: her hair is shoulder-length and curled just like the hair of lots of girls here. So she's hard to pick out. Marty, on the other hand, in his...What is that? One of those things they make you wear when you go out on a boat? - Is easy to spot.

So, when he comes in, Kitty's eyes light up with recognition. She pulls off her apron, comes over, and demands - ]

What have you got to show me?

[He looks pretty surprised, not having expected her to waltz right up to him like that -- and dammit, it's not a life preserver.

But his expression is soon replaced by that of a grin; she must be the one he talked to. Who else would have asked a question like that? He gestures vaguely towards the door.]

Got my time machine parked along the street.

Really?

[ She grins in return, peering out the window. She doesn't spot anything, so she walks past him, opening the door and looking around - ]
